A few years ago, I had the privilege of collaborating with Samantha Gambling, Aaren Topley, and Marcus Lobb to dream up a program that would bring together our diverse initiatives. Partnering with CityHive Vancouver and MeaningfulWork, we applied for Canada Service Corps funding to turn this vision into reality —and that’s how the Rise Up! program was born.
Rise Up! Strengthening Food Systems and Environmental Stewardship connects youth (ages 15-30) with impactful volunteer placements in food systems. These placements span schools, community gardens, food access organizations, businesses, and more. Participants gain hands-on experience, explore the complexities and opportunities within their communities, and discover the diverse career paths that support food systems and environmental stewardship.
We were thrilled to secure funding for Rise Up! in 2023, completing our first phase in spring 2024. Special thanks to Taylor Sacré, Selenna Ho, Jingkai Chen, Madison Pinder, Shannon Turner, Kelsey Sanford, and so many others for all your love and support!! Since then, we’ve applied for multi-year funding to scale the program —and we’re excited to announce that our application was successful! Thank you Government of Canada Emploi et Développement social Canada (EDSC) / Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC)
Working at PHABC, I’m constantly reminded of the privilege and purpose this work brings. From traveling across BC to meeting incredible people and communities —and even occasionally expressing our gratitude to a federal minister —this journey has been deeply rewarding.
Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey —it’s a testament to the power of collaboration and shared vision!

Thank you to the Government of Canada, Emploi et Développement social Canada (EDSC) / Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), and Canada Service Corps for investing in Rise Up!, which supports BC youth and their future to build a more sustainable and equitable BC.
A special thank you to the Honourable Minister Ien for your commitment to investing in our youth in British Columbia, creating lasting opportunities and empowering the next generation.
Through Rise Up! PHABC will engage young leaders across BC in meaningful food systems transformation and environmental stewardship projects, with a focus on supporting Indigenous and underserved communities.
Youth will gain hands-on experience, develop leadership skills, and contribute to building more sustainable local food systems and supporting food security efforts.
We are truly excited about the positive impact this program will have in fostering growth, connections, and skills through service placements with our network community partners province-wide. Together, we’re building a brighter future!
